Human and Animal Waste – a Major Health Risk

Exposure to biological contaminants can put your health at serious risk. Human or animal body fluids and excrement are considered to be biohazardous. These include urine, faeces, animal droppings, blood, vomit, spinal fluid, seminal fluid, and amniotic fluid. The accumulation of and failure to properly remove such substances can make whole environments dangerous and unfit for living, causing contamination and the spread of infection.

Whether, human or animal, body waste and fluids attract and cultivate deadly bacteria, the exposure to which can cause a host of infections, diseases, and even death in serious cases.

Animal waste

Pet urine and faeces is one of the most dangerous biohazard risks a homeowner has to deal with. Dog faeces can harbour bacteria like Salmonella and Campylobacter; viruses like Canine parvovirus type 2; and parasites such as Giardia lamblia, Tapeworm, Ringworm and Hookworm.

Cat faeces harbour a parasite known as Toxoplasma gondii. Exposure can cause an illness in humans called toxoplasmosis, which starts out with flu-like symptoms, eventually causing inflammation of the brain and neurological diseases. Cat urine contains high and concentrated amounts of ammonia. In humans, this can cause respiratory illnesses and skin and eye irritation.

Another parasite found in animal faeces is Roundworm. In humans, it has been known to cause liver problems and even blindness. Other fluids like vomit and blood of animals can also spread bacteria and viruses.

Human waste

In case of human beings, bacteria found in blood and other bodily fluids can live outside the body for days, sometimes weeks. These can spread diseases like HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.

Hepatitis A, E. coli, and Pinworms are known to thrive in human faeces.

Let the professionals do the dirty job

Most human beings are not fully prepared to clean up faeces and urine, although most are required to at some point of time in life. However, in extreme cases, it is recommended that only specially trained and certified biohazard remediation professionals should clean up human waste, animal waste, and other body fluids along with the foul odours they cause, due to the unsafe nature of these substances for human beings.
